In February 2009 a large group of members of non-governmental organizations based in Africa, Asia and South America, working in the field of access to medicine and health issues, came together in Nairobi, Kenya, to discuss the Access to Medicine Index.

The Access to Medicine Index methodology is developed in consultation with many individuals and organisations around the world. This ongoing dialogue and participation of stakeholders ensures the Index reflects a broad range of expertise and perspectives and remains the product of the expectations of a variety of societal groups.
The stakeholder consultation and review process occurs every two years, starting in the year prior to the publication of an Index. This ensures that the Access to Medicine Index remains responsive to the changing global health environment and enables refinement of the framework through which companies are assessed.
The consultation process is characterized by three phases: firstly the views of the stakeholders about the Index methodology are gathered with the help of a publicly available online questionnaire. Secondly a number of roundtable meetings are held for a face-to-face consultation which provides an opportunity for a deeper exchange. Finally the feedback is consolidated and synthesised by MSCI with the support of the Expert Review Committee.
The details of the process varies year-on-year depending on the evolving needs of the initiative. Below you will find a schematic of the Review Process for the Access to Medicine Index 2012.
