In line with stakeholder feedback and given the difference of the access to medicine drivers and business models, we have separated the originator and generics companies and presented them under two separate lists.
Within the Access to Medicine Index report, reference to originator pharmaceutical companies indicates a company whose revenues derive mostly from sales of patented products and which focuses on research and development aimed at developing new pharmaceutical products. These companies play an important role within access to medicine as they contribute to the future of access through the development of new innovative products.
Since the publication of the first Index in 2008, this group has made significant strides towards aligning their corporate responsibility programs with Index criterion as leading pharmaceutical companies, such as Merck, Bayer and Pfizer demonstrated in early 2009. The Index 2010 shows others have taken a positive first step towards greater transparency of access to medicine programs. Watch GSK's CEO Andrew Witty, in an interview about the Index 2010 on CNBC.
